Project S.A.V.E. was implemented in Fall 2004 to educate schools about prevention of sudden cardiac death in the school setting and the components of implementing an automated external defibrillator (AED) program. An AED is used to restart the heart’s normal rhythm when the heart has stopped pumping normally. Prompt CPR and use of an AED can reduce time to defibrillation and potentially save the life of a student, staff member, parent or visitor. “Project S.A.V.E. is preparing schools today for what could happen tomorrow and giving schools the tools to prevent and effectively handle a sudden cardiac event,” said Alison Ellison, Program Coordinator for Project S.A.V.E. “Just having an AED at the school is not enough.

An effective AED program includes training of first responders and increasing the awareness of the whole school staff to recognize and respond in a timely manner to a possible cardiac emergency. The program should also ensure that student athletes have thorough pre-participation sports physical exams, endorsed by the Georgia High School Association, and mandated by the Ryan Boslet bill, passed by the Georgia legislature this year.” Project S.A.V.E. is funded by a generous donation from the Children’s Miracle Network. For more information on implementing a quality school AED program, call Alison Ellison, R.N., N.C.S.N, Project Coordinator at 404-785-7201.
