Do You Think Performing Cpr Underwater Is Logical Or Incredibly Stupid?
If you guys watch Bourne Supremacy,you’ll notice the scene where Bourne perform CPR to the lady trapped in her car underwater.He supposed to pull her out of the vehicle and attempt to revive her on a dry land.Don’t tell me a CIA agent can’t perform CPR in logical manner.I’ve ask my friend who is a doctor about this and he told me that underwater CPR is rubbish and there’s no way for us to perform CPR on a person underwater where you blow air into the person’s mouth while he/she swallowed water into the lungs.Sounds kinda silly huh?I guess Bourne Supremacy is not worth watching when it comes to this particular scene.What do you guys think?

CPR under water does not make sense to me. Can’t see how it would work, chest compressions maybe, if body is secured to something solid so the compressions would actually work, until patient is out of water but not rescue breaths. Remember, it is a FICTIONAL show, please do not attempt rescue of ANY KIND that you see on a TV show unless you are a trained prefessional!

When performing cpr you are doing chest compressions and giving breaths. First off, when you do a chest compression you are causing a vacum in the lungs, like a turkey baster when you push on it it blows the air out, let go and it sucks air in, do this under water and all you are doing is filling the lungs with water, there for no oxygen is being taken into the lungs, so your pumping blood through the body that has no oxygen in it. The purpose of cpr is to keep oxygenated blood pumping through the body.
Second, its a movie.

I don’t know about the movie, but CPR underwater is impossible. I’ve heard of people breathing air into someone that is just running out of air underwater, but not someone that is already unconcious and drowning. You’re right, that is incredibly stupid.

You have obviously never done a 1st Aid class where you learn CPR, as you would know that it is impossible to do CPR on any one while under water.
How do you blow air into a victim? Who has obviously drowned, their lungs would be full of water.
Also how to you do the compressions on a person under water? When you have bouancy of the water against you and the victim.
CPR
C= Cardio = Heart
P= Pulmonary = Pulmonary
R= Resusitation = Breathing for the victim

I think, “It’s Just a movie”!!! You can share oxygen with someone via a tank underwater but if they are already at the point of NOT breathing…..

Underwater CPR can be performed by mouth to nose and by covering the patients mouth, and is usually performed when the patient is trapped or lodged underwater and is unable to be moved above water and onto dry land.
This when used correctly can save a person’s life but can be affected by the amount of fluid in their lungs.

Sounds stupid to me also. Your Dr. friend is right.

First off, it’s a movie – so chill. Secondly, he was blowing air into her lungs…which can revive someone who has simply stopped breathing. But we all know she was shot in the head, there was no reviving her.

Good point…it works better when the victim isn’t submerged!
February 11, 2010 @ 9:16 pm
i don’t think its logical to do CPR underwater b/c the person will just keep gettiing water in their lungs and you might end up drowing too

I think the writer of that movie is gay!
