To Those Who Hated Me For The Cpr/mouth Question, Did You Know My Brother Died At A Restaurant With No Cpr?
I have signed up to take CPR and am also contacting my representative to perhaps sponsor a bill requiring mouth shields at places of business. Maybe I can help save one family the grief we experienced.

I am so sorry for your loss. It amazes me how many people don’t know CPR or how to check a pulse or even basic first aid. I think that you’re doing a beautiful thing by learning CPR and encouraging barrier devices in public places.
Many blessings to you.
Also, Trista is wrong. In the US, “good samaritan laws” protect those giving first aid in good faith from lawsuits. If you are unconscious, it is assumed by law, that you want to be helped (unless you have a notarized letter to the contrary and a family member backing that up).

wow sorry for your loss you can probably contact as you said your state rep..most people certified in CPR carry disposable mouth shields with them. When you take the course ask your teacher about getting some that you can carry with you.

Holy cow. That is unbelievable. It’s a sad pathetic world we live in, and I’m sorry that your loss caused you to seek out a change for the better. We should proactively look to avoid circumstances like this. I am very sorry for your loss.

i think that’s a great idea and i am terribly sorry for your lose! good luck!

They probably didn’t know since you probably didn’t disclose the fact. Remember, this is an anonymous site so the only information we have is provided by you.
I’m sorry for your loss. Ultimately, the face shield laws would depend on having people who know what they are doing with CPR, and most people who know CPR are willing to take the risk to help someone live.

People are jerks. I asked a goofy question about what I should call the evil voice in my head and someone called me stupid to ask such a dumbass question and that I should be in a mental institution. People can’t take a joke when there is one and obviously now people think you are jerking them around when you’re in fact serious. Weird. I am sorry for your loss.

Good for you for standing up and trying to make a difference!
I know with my CPR/First Aid training I would not be able to live with myself if I were to stand back and watch someone go from bad to worse and not do anything.
I am a freak about germs but in my line of work I had to learn these things and there is a reason for it. If they needed to be put to use yes I would put them to use.
Unfortunately a lot of people do not know how to perform CPR…and as your concern feel like they can only do it with a barrier…which is of course ideal…but sometimes you are just not in that position.
They make key chains now with barriers on them so you can have one on you at all times…some of those keychains even have gloves in them. Now they just need to spread the word and help those in need!!!

CPR is a very important thing to know. Good for you for taking it.

I am very sorry. You have my sympathies. You are doing a good thing, good luck!

I am so sorry about your brother. I work in the medical field, and I know how important CPR can be to safe someones life. And for someone to stand by and let someone die seems insane. I do know the safety hazards of todays society, with all the diseases that we have. I think it should be a law that in ever public place, restaurant, gas station, physicians office, etc. there should be mouth pieces to protect the one administering the CPR. I think you should go for it. Take it as for as it has to go..
Good Luck.

Ignore the bozo. I looked at the previous post and there was a couple not without mouth shields but I wonder if they could actually watch somebody die over that and there was a single twit. Ironically fate has a way of feeding people their own words and I strongly suspect that bozo will eventually see things differently.
While there are people who are afraid of disease and won’t do CPR very few of them actually know CPR. The mindset that produces that mentality tends to preclude them taking time and effort to learn how to save a life.
I personally have known CPR most of my life. Been fortunate and never had to use it. I did once have to watch somebody die who I could not help. They were hit by a dump truck and there was no chest to do compressions on. I had to snap the poor guys ankle just to help the EMT’s get the guy out of the vehicle.
What I do is carry a mouth shield in my wallet and another in my car. Primarily I do this not from fear of disase but because people tend to puke when you do CPR on them and I really don’t want that kind of interuption if I am saving thier life. Going on with CPR would be very difficult I suspect without a mouth shield but it of course beats allowing somebody to die that you could save.
I am sorry for your loss. It is highly possible that your brother would have died anyway. CPR saves lives but even with CPR the majority of people die . I am also trained with an AED and served as an AED operator in places I worked. Even the AED only saves a few people out of those who go into arrest. I look at it this way. What if that exception was me or someone I loved? The expses I think is well worth it if we save even only %1 more people each year.
I also feel that CPR training should be manditory. While some people are never going to be able to effect good CPR no matter how much training if everybody knew it the odds are good one of the people around could and would do a decent job administering CPR. So reguarless of what could have happened. What better way to celibrate the memory of your brother than to help save other’s lives?

Oh man. So sorry for your loss. Good for you for signing up to learn CPR.

Sorry for your loss. I am unaware of your previous question. I was taught CPR in high school and again when I starting nursing school. Did you know that if you give someone CPR without their permission they have the right to sue you, some people have done this, it is very wrong and is probably why people are cautious to help others. They are afraid their good deed will end up costing them money. I wish you the best of luck with your progress. XOXO

I answered your last question. I am sorry to hear of your loss.
Often it takes something like this to shock us into taking some sort of action that will hopefully prevent someone Else’s brother from being in a position without first aid. Hope you get on a fun course, (we learn better when we enjoy it)and “mouth shields” of various types are a great idea. many companies in the UK now keep them handy.
ps, good point by trista, in the UK no judge will convict for applying first aid as long as it is within the guidelines of the training manual.

what was your original question? I’m sorry about your brother. If I had been there it wouldn’t have crossed my mind whether or not to do CPR, it would have been done! My brother did CPR on a lady one time that ended up dying. He had to hire an attorney because the family said itn was his fault that she died. This world is tragic.

Wow…sorry for your loss.

It is sad, and I am truly sorry for your loss. Did you brother have a heart attack, or did he choke? These different emergencies require different life saving techniques. You will learn both when you learn CPR. I carry a barrier on my key chain, and even a napkin at a restaurant will work as a barrier. My guess is that no one knew how to save a life. I will just mention one more thing and that is the “Good Samaritan” law. This law says if you are a layperson and attempt to save a life, you cannot be held liable or be sued because you tried to do a good thing. Learn your lessons well, you may just save a life someday of a total stranger or someone you love.
December 21, 2009 @ 11:09 am
Your brother died because nobody wanted to give him CPR because there were no mouth shields? What kind of pathetic sick world are we living in where people just stood there and watched someone die???? I hate this world.
December 21, 2009 @ 4:09 pm
mouth shields would be a great thing to have, but it is someones duty, who has been trained in the area to give cpr no matter what, expecially if they are a health care profession, i belive they are leagally obligated.
