a pacemaker is a device installed in the chest cavity and connected to the heart to regulate the pace at which the heart beats. a defibrillator electrically shocks the heart if it goes into cardiac arrest, basically stops beating.

I have a heart failure pacemaker/defibrillator combination implanted in my upper left shoulder area. Since my heart likes to race, the pacemaker keeps the pace, if the heart speeds too fast up my internal defibrillator will Zap me to a normal heart rate.
